Excess weight soon will pass smoking as cancer cause.

Obesity is on course to overtake tobacco as the leading risk factor for cancer in America, according to a report issued today.
Action Points
  • Explain to interested patients that the report issued today was based on an analysis of data from more than 7,000 diet and nutrition studies, but the report itself has not been peer-reviewed or published by a journal.

  • Explain to interested patients that excess weight has been associated with increased risk of heart disease and diabetes and this report adds more evidence of the benefit of maintaining normal weight throughout life.

Moreover, the risk for cancer increases even with modest weight gain, said Walter C. Willett, M.D., Ph.D., of the Harvard School of Public Health. He said excess body fat increased the risk for cancers of the colon, kidney, and pancreas, adenocarcinoma of the esophagus and endometrium, and breast cancer in postmenopausal women.

Bad news for those of us who are weak around food!
