Exercise to prevent Diabetes

Other groups have also reported on the beneficial effects of exercise in terms of prevention and treatment of diabetes. University of Missouri researchers found that diabetic rats given an exercise session lasting as little as 15 minutes had increased insulin sensitivity in muscle tissues. Since the majority of blood sugar ends up in muscle tissue, it is reasonable to assume that increased physical exertion would result in a greater uptake of sugar by muscle. This would in turn lower the total required amount of circulating insulin, since insulin concentration does increase when there is a slow rate of glucose clearance from the bloodstream.
