Forecast for solar power: Sunny

A few dozen companies say advances in technology will let them halve the price of solar-panel installations in as little as three years.

By 2014, solar-system prices will be competitive with conventional electricity when energy savings are figured in, Deutsche Bank says.

The solar industry is expected to triple in the next three years, from about $13 billion to $40 billion in revenue, says analyst Jesse Pichel of Piper Jaffray.
Solar's big advantage is that it supplies the most electricity midday, when demand peaks. And it can be located at homes and businesses, reducing the need to build pollution-belching power plants and unsightly transmission lines. In states such as California, with high electricity prices and government incentives, solar is already a bargain for some customers.

A MIRACLE material for the 21st century could protect your home against bomb
blasts, mop up oil spillages and even help man to fly to Mars.

Aerogel, one of the world’s lightest solids, can withstand a direct blast of
1kg of dynamite and protect against heat from a blowtorch at more than
1,300C.

Scientists are working to discover new applications for the substance, ranging
from the next generation of tennis rackets to super-insulated space suits
for a manned mission to Mars

this could be extremely interesting!

A New "Designer" Treatment for Multiple Sclerosis

Science Image: multiple sclerosis sufferer

Researchers have proposed a new treatment for multiple sclerosis (MS) that utilizes the hormone estrogen to stave off and even reverse some of the mysterious disease's debilitating symptoms without the dangerous side effects of some other hormone therapies.

MS is largely believed to be an autoimmune disease in which the immune system turns on healthy tissue—in this case in the brain and nervous system. Current treatments include medicines designed to suppress an overactive immune system and reduce inflammation, a first-line response of the immune system. Whereas Copaxone and other such drugs often improve some of the muscle weakness and movement issues associated with the condition, they do little to combat the accompanying neurodegeneration.

In recent years, researchers began focusing on the potential of estrogen in battling MS after observing that the disease went into remission during pregnancy.
Research shows that estrogen can be used to counteract nerve cell degeneration caused by MS without increased risks of breast and uterine cancers

Garlic attacks brain cancer

Garlic can kill cells that cause glioblastoma, a brain cancer that is usually fatal, researchers in South Carolina have found.

Swapan Ray and Narendra Banik, neurosciences professors at the Medical University of South Carolina, said their discovery came during a search for a way to kill the cancer without harming healthy cells, The (Charleston, S.C.) Post and Courier reported.
"In the disease, you want to kill the cells, but you want to protect others," Banik told the newspaper. "Our tests were to see how effective the compounds were."
Banik, Ray and post-doctoral fellow Arabinda Das tested several organic compounds on cancerous cells. They included garlic in the test program because of its reputation for having healing powers.
Three organo-sulfur compounds they tested effectively stopped the cancerous cells, Ray said.
"This research highlights the great promise of plant-originated compounds as natural medicine for controlling the malignant growth of human brain tumor cells," Ray said.

Create Shared Folders Between You & Your Friends

FolderShareTM allows you to create a private peer-to-peer network that will help you to synchronize files across multiple devices and access or share files with colleagues and friends. You no longer need to send large files via email, burn them to CDs/DVDs and mail them, or upload them to a website. FolderShare allows you to share and sync important information instantly with anyone you invite, making it the perfect solution for personal or small business use.
I use this to share file. I really like it because it does it in the background. The other person does not have to be there when you want to send a file. This program creates a folder on both computers and keep them synced. I find it works really well for me.

Skype Shifts The Blame To Microsoft

clipped from www.neowin.net
Skype is pointing the finger at Windows Update for a critical system crash that wiped out the VoIP service for two days. Previously they had reported that the outage was to do with its own software.

In a statement posted on the company's support page, the company claims: "The disruption was initiated by a massive restart of our user's computers across the globe within a very short timeframe as they re-booted after receiving a routine software update." This is presumably the Windows updates that were sent out on Patch Tuesday last week, which required the PC to be restarted.

"The abnormally high number of restarts affected Skype's network resources," the company adds. "This caused a flood of log-in requests, which, combined with the lack of peer-to-peer network resources, prompted a chain reaction that had a critical impact."
Wow. Skype initially blamed their own software, now Microsoft is the culprit. MS always seems to get the blame
