Water Boots Metabolism

clipped from www.prevention.com
Drink 8 glasses of water per day
Why It Works

Water is not just a thirst quencher--it actually speeds the body's metabolism. Researchers in Germany found that drinking two 8-ounce glasses of cold water increased their subjects' metabolic rate by 30%, and the effect persisted for 90 minutes. One-third of the boost came from the body's efforts to warm the water, but the rest was due to the work the body did to absorb it. "When drinking water, no calories are ingested but calories are used, unlike when drinking sodas, where additional calories are ingested and possibly stored," explains the lead researcher, Michael Boschmann, MD, of University Medicine Berlin.

Thiamine Deficency - link to Diabetes side effectd

clipped from news.bbc.co.uk
A simple vitamin deficiency may be the cause of many of the side effects of diabetes, a study suggests.
Researchers found people with the disease expelled thiamine - vitamin B1 - from their bodies at 15 times the normal rate in a study of 94 people.
The Warwick University team said thiamine helped ward off complications such as heart disease and eye problems,
It is the first time a deficiency of the vitamin, which is found in meat, yeast and grains, has been identified in people with diabetes.

Thiamine is key to warding off vascular problems such as kidney, retina and nerve damage as well as heart disease and stroke.

It works by helping protect cells against the effect of high glucose levels.

"Around 80% of people with diabetes die of cardiovascular disease and diabetes is the leading cause of blindness in the UK's working age population.
Supplementing diets could be an effective way of minimising the risk of these complications."
Next time I go shopping, I am getting some B1.
If true, this is great news for diabetics.

COPD strikes men & women differently

clipped from health.yahoo.com

WEDNESDAY, Aug. 1 (HealthDay News) -- The breathing disorder called chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) hits women harder than men and in a different way, a new study finds.

COPD actually consists of two different lung diseases -- chronic bronchitis, which damages the lining of the airways, and emphysema, which damages the alveoli, the tiny sacs through which oxygen enters the blood. A study of more than 1,000 COPD patients, 38.8 percent of them women, found that bronchitis is more common in women and emphysema more common in men.
women in the study reported more breathlessness, a higher incidence of depression and a lower quality of life
the number of American women diagnosed with COPD now exceeds the number of men
COPD is the fourth leading cause of death in the United States, and the number of women dying of the condition has exceeded the toll among men for four consecutive years,
This is an awful disease with no cure. I know first hand, because I have it. Not to preach BUT to you smokers -- please consider quitting.
